Food, glorious food ... and tourism, and arts, and all that good stuff

I have a Graduate Certificate in Gastronomy from Le Cordon Bleu, once spent a delightful year working (and occasionally tasting) with Maggie Beer  and have worked with many clients and publications in the food sector. And because I'm a paddock-to-plate-plus-laboratory girl, I work with clients right along the food chain, bringing my science communicator experience to the table in the name of consumer education around food and talking to consumers about key issues including sustainability, biosecurity and  environmental management.

Since 2007 I have assisted over 30 businesses to become finalists in the SA Premier's Food Awards (now the FoodSA Awards), and the Australian Caper Company, Gelista, Humbugz Honey, Kangaroo Island Pure Grain, Kyton's Bakery, Savannah Lamb, Tucker's Natural and Udder Delights to become winners. The Write Alternative has also undertaken various food marketing and writing projects for clients such as Tourism SA, Food SA and various small to medium enterprises with a local story to tell. As well as the SA Premier's Food Industry Awards, I often work with clients on applications for regional, business, export and community awards. For the past four years I have been working with Food SA, the peak body for the food and beverage industry in South Australia, on communications projects ranging from communications, industry research, database management, websites, social media, tand he delightful Eat Local SA program.

I've also worked for 25 years as a feature and profile writer in the arts, crafts and food sectors. I nearly always end up wanting to learn how to make or do whatever I am writing about. Or eat what I'm writing about. In my downtime I pursue varous creative pursuits, and yes, I cook. And eat. I do this in the name of research of course, so that I can better understand what I am writing about.

Taking care of business

I often work with clients just starting out on a communications, marketing or branding strategy. I specialise in working with small businesses to ensure their communications goals are in line with their business and life objectives. For established businesses, I can help by evaluating the current situation and developing strategies to reach the client's objectives - and I can also develop and write technical documents and training/procedure manuals to go with those plans. I use my information management background to help clients get to grips with customer relationship management and internal communications. My clients over the years for these services have included various government agencies in Australia and overseas and not-for-profit organisations of all sizes.

Libraries, literacy and effective management of information and knowledge are causes dear to me. I've been involved in promoting the extraordinary value of this profession to all aspects of business and daily life ever since my first job as a reference librarian, and then had the pleasure of spending some years as editor of INCITE, the national magazine of  the Australian Library and Information Association. I've also helped a lot of organisations, community groups and businesses get to grips with the information they need to manage, always tailoring the system to meet the need.

A little or a lot

The Write Alternative philsophy is to work smart, stick to the budget and keep clients connected to what's going on. A brochure here, some advice there, a full-blown strategy or regular updates and monitoring of your social media - I am happy to do as much or as little as is required. I work with a range of designers, creative people and technical specialists so I can also help you assemble a team for your communications job - or join your team to provide the writing you need.  And I like to keep it simple, so it all starts with a chat, not with the clock ticking.
